Frequently Asked Questions
As a licensed healthcare professional, you can likely own a clinic, but you will need to consult with an attorney to be certain. However if you are not a provider, you will need a provider to complete the patient's H&P and order the indicated treatment plan. Providers are MDs, DOs, Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and Physician Assistants (PAs). The provider required will vary from state to state. Some states allow NPs and CRNAs to practice independently (without physician involvement), while others require NPs or CRNAs to collaborate with or be supervised by a physician. You will need to check your state’s Nurse Practice Act to determine the level of physician involvement that is required. If the Nurse Practice Act is vague or unclear, we recommend consulting with a healthcare attorney familiar with your state’s scope of practice regulations.

Unfortunately, we are not attorneys and will not be able to provide legal advice for state specific regulations.
Our course points you in the right direction by showing you the departments and agencies that typically regulate practices in most states. By checking with these agencies, you will be able to learn what the regulations are in your state.
The course describes how to find the Nurse Practice Act (NPA) in your state. If you are a nurse, nurse practitioner or CRNA (or if you plan to hire one), the NPA will describe the scope of practice for your license type and it will outline the level of physician (MD or DO) involvement that is required for your state.
For other state specific legal/regulatory advice, we recommend consulting with an experienced healthcare attorney who is licensed in your state.
